The purpose of a new study published in Journal of the Formosan Medical Association was to explore whether sarcopenia is associated with hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in cirrhotic patients. This meta-analysis entailed a search from PubMed and EMBASE for relevant cohort and case-control studies investigating the association between sarcopenia and HE. Data of patients characteristics, definition of low muscle mass, and protocols of grading or diagnosing HE were retrieved. Overall, six studies were selected comprising 1,795 patients. The results revealed that sarcopenia was positively associated with the presence of HE. While the association was less likely to be affected by differences in research designs, focused study outcomes, muscle mass measurements, and protocols of grading or diagnosing HE. On the other hand, there was lack of evidence supporting higher serum ammonia levels in patients with sarcopenia. Thus, it was inferred that in patients with liver cirrhosis, there is a significant association between sarcopenia and HE.
